DALIA CARELLA (NY) - DOWN & DIRTY KARSILAMA! For the second time at SPIRIT, DALIA a world-renowned Middle Eastern Contemporary Dancer, Choreographer, Instructress and Global Fusion Artist in her own right. Audiences from around the world have applauded her mystical and innovative dances and choreographies that are taken from the tradition of the countries she is representing. The core of DALIA’S work is her research along the ROMANI trail focusing on Spain, India & Turkey, and developed styles as “El mundo” & “Dunyavi”. Her creativity of blending these Roma Dance forms together is expressed in a fiery and passionate dance experience. She is our inspiration in the Gypsy style. THE CLASS: This workshop will be focusing on both slow and fast Karsilama. Emphasis will be on learning a more laid back bluesy style (getting down) teaching you a unique feeling for the Karsilama 9/8 rhythm and Romani hand gesturing. Foot work patterns (letting your feet experience the dirt) and skirt work technique will be taught that will set the stage on fire... |

ZOE (CA) - OOEY GOOEY STUFF..
An innovative dancer, has her own unique take on Tribal Bellydance. Performed w/ Jill Parker, Aziza, Liz Strong, and was a member of the SUHAILA Dance Co. in 2001, & now is touring internationally w/ THE BELLYDANCE SUPERSTARS AND THE INDIGO since 2005. Her interpretation of Bellydance is enhanced through the study of other dance forms, including Classical Indian Kathak. ZOE is currently part of the Group Arabesque with Liz Strong, a dance troupe pushing the boundaries of traditional Bellydance and also a member of the Yard-dogs Road Show THE CLASS: Sultry moves with an old timey sensibility! Zoe will be incorporating a touch of her burlesque influence into a slow and playful choreography she will be teaching. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch will be focused in this class. If Mata Hari was around today, she might have done a few of these moves..... |

AMY artistic director, her intricate choreographies, unique style and UNMATA’ S hard work brought home several recent awards such as Ensemble of the Year 2005 (NV), BD troupe of the year 2004 (CA) and BD Troupe USA 2004 (OR). AMY has taught workshops & performed nationwide at Tribal events & hosts the Blood Moon Regale, Sacramento’s largest produced event THE CLASS: This intense workshop focuses on fast! Amy will lay down the stylistic foundation and technical breakdown for UNMATA’s awe-inspiring omis, ferocious shimmies, and bad-ass body pops. Each movement will include “transition-training” so it can be used alone or linked with other movements to create a short choreography. UNMATA is known for beat-your-butt drilling and technical obsession, so bring lots of water and come prepared to sweat! |

ARIELLAH (SF)… THE DARKER SIDE OF DRILLING With a Moroccan ancestry, was part of the DANSE MAHGREB, directed by Janine Ryle, became a founding member of RACHEL’S INDIGO in 2003, was awarded first place in the Star Fusion & was featured in the first of its kind, Gothic Belly Dance DVD. ARIELLAH’S style reflects her personal interpretation of tribal fusion belly dance, which blends the darker side of Middle Eastern, American Tribal Style with Indian and Flamenco influences, while embracing a modern San Francisco very dark flavor, that is uniquely her own. …..& is an accomplished tribal fusion and techno-fusion artist, executing amazing pops, locks, and ultra-tight isolations within intricate Tribal-style work. THE CLASS: Drill chest isolations, pops, locks, and snake-like gothic belly dance arm movements. Students will also learn a short choreography, which will incorporate these techniques. FUN & FUNKY FUSION … We loved them at the last SPIRIT 6 with their performance full of humor and fun… STEPHANIE BARTO, Director & ESTHER MCCREADIE Senior troupe member are back. A Chicago-based Tribal Fusion bellydance ensemble that was founded in 1997 by STEPHANIE BARTO and Heather Stants. The troupe was the Midwest pioneer of Carolena Nericcio's ATS format, and the troupe continues to evolve and create their own unique interpretation of ATS improv while also developing innovative and theatrical Bellydance fusion choreographies. THE CLASS: Spice up your Tribal-style improv and choreographies with a selection of fun and funky combinations! Learn strategies for using short combinations with quick, discreet cues to add locks and pops to your ATS ... these techniques work really well for adding personality to your group improv, and will increase your potential to really dig in and interpret the music. A selection of READ MY HIPS signature floorwork combinations will also be included. Knee pads if needed. |

VOLSHANINOVA (RUSSIA)
performer, singer, dancer, choreographer, teacher, composer and actress. She was born and raised in one of the most famous Gypsy artistic family Rada & Nikolai Volshaninov. She began her career at early age at the Visual Arts School and at the Gnesis Music & Performing Arts in Moscou, Russia and traveled the world touring with her family throughout the years. She is the first and only instructor who teaches the Gyspy Culture & dance from Russia in Florida, performing in her own shows... as Gypsy Dancer, Belly Dancer, Singer in theatres, weddings...private functions and festivals THE CLASS - The Gypsy folk dance from Russia is full of electrifying rhythms, movements and expressions that is magical of Gyspy dance. Kalinka will open up your improvisation style using combinations w/ shawl, shoulders movements, skirts techniques and traditional folk step dance. Bring full skirt, veil or shawl, and (if you have!!) ... dancing medium heel shoes. |

NIURCA MARQUEZ
Born in New Jersey in 1976, she has studied with recognized Flamenco masters in the US and in Spain. She has received various grants for her work as a dancer and choreographer including Artist Access (2003 & 2006) and Artist Enhancement Grant (2005 & 2007), the latter of which lead to an evening-length presentation as part of Bailes Ferrer’s Series Café Cantante (2006) in collaboration with recognized Flamenco guitarist and composer Jose Luis Rodriguez. Over the past four years, NIURCA has focused her work on the production of Flamenco events and festivals creating a link between artists in Seville, Madrid and Miami. She is co-founded and Festival Director of Flamenco in the Sun and currently resides part-time in Seville. Her capacity for interpretation has lead her on a constant search for a corporeal language in which the dancing surpasses the limits of traditional flamenco, thus making her particularly sought after for works with a set story line. She utilizes other dance styles and the Feldenkrais Method extensively in her teaching of Flamenco to facilitate movement ideas and concepts that are culturally specific and engrained with an innate understanding of the form. THE CLASS : SOUL FLAMENCO This class will take students on an intense journey into the world of Flamenco. Focusing on the use of the rib-cage and hips, students will explore some of the movement language of this traditional form and it's links to other styles. Similarities in movement vocabularies will be emphasized making this class ideal for students of other dance styles. Movement combinations will be set in at least three different Flamenco genres. Please bring a fan to class as its use will be explored. |
