ARADIA AND LUCRETIA*RENEE(CA) ARE SERPENTINE: TEMPLE DANCERS OF THE SERPENT MYTHOS  is a dark tribal/butoh fusion bellydance duet. They are  Co-founders, co-designers, co-choreographers &  merge their passions of art and dark tribal belly dance in a unique exploration of self-expression and goddess devotion.

SERPENTINE explores the ancient art of storytelling through spectacle and ritual; each performance is a living vivid painting. Along with writing unique choreography, each artist creates their own costumes, stage props, and fire dancing tools.

The rites of SERPENTINE open into a new aeon. As a transformative duet, ARADIA & LUCRETIA*RENEE explore the beauty and mysterious rituals of butoh: reinventing to birth the serpent mythos & has performed with talented artists/ musicians such as Cheb i Sabbah, Soriah, Azphodel, Jill Tracy, Paul Mercer, March Fourth, and toured Europe joining creative forces with Faith and the Muse, resonating & inspired by the gothic/ tribal culture, has also coordinated East:Meets:West, a community celebration of dark fusion belly dance

ARADIA is teaching the class, a visionary artist of many mediums, a devoted temple dancer & teacher. Honoring the feminine divine through sacred dance & intentional movement. She actively studies several forms of yoga, butoh, ballet, sacred temple dance, tribal fusion belly dance, art therapy, theatrical improvisation, healing modalities, magic, esoteric myths & eastern mysticism. . She delivers spellbinding choreography resonating the honoring of nature and the magic of storytelling. ARADIA approaches performance as an extension of her theater & visual arts training.

YUMI & MASAMI (JAPAN) for the 3rd time at SPIRIT have been dancing Tribal fusion style, with sounds of cajons, darabukas, didgeridoues, guitars respecting movements of the traditional bellydance and expanding the  Tribal Fusion in Japan.

 

These 2 amazing dancers creates original, flowing though solid movements, and mysterious dances & we are so happy they are back.

 

THE CLASS: DRUM SOLO - JAPANESE FUSION BELLYDANCE  You will  enjoy dancing our original choreography on dramatic Drum Solo which has a little surprise at the end of the song.

Learn the basics of ARIELLA'S style of fusion belly dance by strengthening the body, as well as refining technique. Dancers will work through concepts such as fluidity, agility and muscular isolation. We have all studied a variety of western and world dances, pulling from them the movements and concepts that inspire us. We combine, revise and twist these pieces together to form an expressive and unconventional fusion style that is constantly developing and evolving.

UP, DOWN AND ALL AROUND!

Looking to broaden your range of bellydance movement?  Consider adding some West African flavor to your dance repotoire!   In this fun and challenging workshop you will be taught the basics of IAF (Industrial African Fusion); from low grounding moves to uplifting freeing moves that show you how to defy gravity. 

 

Mix in one part bellydance and one part attitude, and you have the recipe for a delicious dance creation!

They are a fascinating and powerful  blend of East and West and inner and outer beauty.  They specialize in dances of India including Bollywood, folkloric, (Bhangra, Rajastani, Garba), Mujra, and Classical (northern & southern). They are the founders, artistic directors and choreographers of their own dance company, which includes over 70 professional artists - over 50 male and female dancers and 20 musicians. They also choreographed, directed, produced, as well as performed in Hooray for Bollywood at the famous Alex Theater . The show received rave reviews, and is currently pending a 20-city U.S. tour.

CLASS 1: RAJASTANI  / BOLLYWOOD: Rajastan is the desert region of India where the gypsies originated. Danced mostly by women, this street folk dance is known for its spins, backbends, protruding hip movements and has been said to highly influence belly dance, especially tribal style. In this workshop, we’ll mix a fusion of Rajastan and Bollywood to create a fun, very informative dance.

 

CLASS 2:  BOLLYWOOD:  Bombay (Mumbai) produces the highest number of films in the world.  The name “Bollywood” is derived from the combination of Bombay and Hollywood, indicating the music is from the films. In the simplest terms, the style of Bollywood music & dance, is a mixture of different Indian dance styles to a western beat. 

 

Within India alone, there are hundreds of different languages, cultures, religions, and dance styles (eight classical and hundreds of folk dances from villages).  In Bollywood, many of these styles are incorporated with some western movements, creating a style that’s very unique.  Most songs are sung in Hindi (which the twins speak); however, many songs mix the languages. 

 

Many songs have religious gestures and meanings, which also must be understood and carefully choreographed so that there is no offending anyone. HIGH ENERGY FUN HOUR

 

 

 

DALIA CARELLA (NY)  -  3rd time @ SPIRIT, is a world renowned ME Contemporary Dancer, Choreographer, teacher & Global Fusion Artist in her own right. Audiences from around the world have applauded her mystical & innovative dances & choreographies that are taken from the tradition of the countries she is representing.

 

The core of DALIA’s work is her research along the ROMANI trail focusing on Spain, India & Turkey, & developed styles as “EL MUNDO” & “DUNIYAVI”. Her creativity of blending these Roma Dance forms together is expressed in a fiery & passionate dance experience. She is our inspiration in the GYPSY style.

 

Her dances are both traditional and contemporary with a spiritual essence. Some of DALIA new works represent her on-going study and research of Sacred Movement and Ancient Hand Gesturing. Blending mudras and movements from India, China, Japan, North Africa, and Egypt, her choreographies represent movement rituals from the ancient to the avant-garde.

THE CLASS: EL MUNDO  - Fusion of Belly Dance, Flamenco and Latin Caribbean Dance. -Combinations will be taught to hot Arabic/latin music.  Hip work, skirt work, hand gesturing and footwork will be combined in these fiery combinations. BRING SKIRTS, ANKLE LENGTH OR SHORT SKIRT THAT'S ABOVE THE KNEE   

 

 

 

YASMEEN (FL) - We are so excited to have YASMEEN,  the source from Egypt at SPIRIT.  Immerse yourself to Egyptian Style with a dancer who lived and worked in the mother country of Belly Dance.

 YASMEEN exotic blend of Puerto Rican & Moroccan Heritage, with a passion for Art, Music and Dance started her dance training at the age of three and a half years old with pre Ballet, folkloric, Hip Hop and Modern Dance before transcending her love to Tribal fusion Bellydance and finally Classical Egyptian Oriental & Having trained with top world renown master teachers from US  like Maja from the Nile & Maria Jamal & abroad with  the Stars of Egyptian Dance: Madame Raqia Hassan, Mona el Said & Nagwa Fouad.

While in Egypt, She performed at the Ahlan Wasahlan Festival in Cairo, lived & worked there at the Alzeebah Hotel & Resort in Giza.

TJARDA (NETHERLANDS)

TJARDA is an accomplished dancer and trained teacher with a unique approach to bellydance. She has studied many genres of dance including Middle Eastern, modern, flamenco and mime as well as dance therapy and improvised movement. Fusing all of the above with her natural creativity, TJARDA delivers progressive choreography resonating within the world wide culture of movement.

In March 2005 Tjarda became the artistic director and choreographer of the innovative and charismatic UZUMÉ, the leading Tribal Fusion bellydance company in Europe & have won several awards, including one for Best Dance Company.

In 2008 TJARDA was nominated by The National Institute for the Voluntary Arts for Most Promising Upcoming Choreographer with Exquisite Skills, performs solo or with The UZUMÉ throughout Europe and the USA. Blurring lines and drawing inspiration from even the most unlikely sources, TJARDA is a choreographic force in today's Tribal Fusion Scene.

AEPRIL SCHAILE (MA)

An American priestess of the Dark Goddess, working thorugh the ancient & ever evolving arts
of Belly dance, music, Ritual Theater, and Divination.

AEPRIL dances to make the archetypal Dark Feminine sacred again, is a recognized innovator of dark theatrical and shamanistic bellydance. teaches ongoing classes in Salem, MA, and teaches workshops both locally and nationwide. She will be at TRIBAL IN PARIS/ JAN 2010.

Aepril became deeply immersed in the world of Spirits and Invisibles during a long period of voluntary solitude. There, while inhabiting the wild and magical coast and woods of northern New England with her wolf companion Coda, her heart was opened, and dance and music moved through her in a new and mediumistic way; she is inspired by forces of nature such as winged creatures, wolves, storms, and the sea; she is also inspired by the invisible forces of the subconscious, the supernatural, and the synchronistic. Aepril dances as a ritual of gratitude to the Divine for Her powers of regeneration and redemption.

Interested in times past as well as the Timeless, Aepril’s “ancestors” of dance include Ruth St Denis, Josephine Baker, and Isadora Duncan. She is also influenced by bellydance masters Elena Lentini and Dunya, as well as the performance artists Diamanda Galas and Rachel Rosenthal in her approach to performing

Her recent performances include Night of 1000 Goddesses in NYC, An Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance 2008 (EEMED) in Los Angeles, and she was a Guest Artist at Rakkasah’s Spring Caravan 2008 in NJ. Aepril , . She directs Exquisite Corpse Productions which produces a darkly themed theatrical bellydance event called Descent: Dances of the Dark Goddess; she annually co-produces The Art of Bellydance show with the Salem Arts Association in Salem, Massachusetts. Aepril is an AFAA certified Group Fitness Instructor, and she holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art.

THE CLASS: EERIE SERPENTS & ETHEREAL GRACE
Technique for creating inhuman, ghostly appearance for bellydance. We will work to create liquid arms and body, the appearance of “floating” across the floor, otherworldly locks and isolations. We will explore how to use space and time – unusual level changes, theatrical blocking and staging, eerie traveling steps. In addition to form, the importance of dramatic technique is emphasized – facial communication, striking pauses and dynamics, energy and power direction and intention. All will be integrated at the end in a haunting choreography.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

MYRA KRIEN (NM) and HER TROUPE AHATTI - 3RD WINNER AT SPIRIT COMPETITION

MYRA KRIEN (NM)

 

By popular demand she is back at SPIRIT after the amazing class she gave last year and her troupe AHATTI were 3rd  WINNER at the SPIRIT competition.  MYRA is an international performer, choreographer, and teacher. She is known for her elegant and graceful presence as well as her stylistic versatility, from traditional Egyptian (folkloric and modern) to classical tribal and contemporary fusion forms, with a strong emphasis on Flamenco and East Indian dance.

A highly sought after dance instructor and choreographer, her workshops are often described as "profound and inspirational." She imbues her teaching with a deep respect and abiding passion for the form, with a strong emphasis on anatomical technique and history of the art form and culture.


She is the Founder/Director/Master Teacher for Pomegranate SEEDs (Self-Esteem, Empowerment, and Education through Dance) a non-profit youth development organization. Krien is the owner and Director of Pomegranate Studios, hosting over forty classes weekly in various movement arts. She is the creator of Funk-Ex fitness, a state-of-the-art dance fitness program

THE CLASS:  BELLY BAILE : HOT Combinations! This stylized form, created by Myra Krien, draws from tribal and oriental style belly dance, flamenco, east indian, hip hop, jazz, and modern.  These combinations are great for every style of dance and extremely usable.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ARTEMIS MOURAT (MD The Passion of the dance. We are so proud to have her at SPIRIT 10 -

 ARTEMIS  has been dancing, teaching and researching dance history in the United States and abroad for her entire adult life, is of Greek and Turkish descent. She fuses her love of these cultures with strong academic knowledge and excellent dance technique. She brings her spirited and articulate technique to workshops which include information on the history and cultures that generate the dances she teaches. She believes that we can all use art to build bridges across cultures.

Artemis has contributed to many publications. Extensive travel to 33 countries and intensive research into oriental dance, Rromany (Gypsy) dance and dance ethnology have yielded many manuscripts and articles, continues in her efforts to have Middle Eastern dance receive the recognition and respect that every other legitimate dance form enjoys.

She has won the "Ethnic Dancer of the Year Award" presented by the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance (IAMED) and has won the "Most Popular Ethnic Dancer Award" from Zaghareet Magazine twice. Artemis has also won their "Lifetime Achievement Award."

 

THE CLASS: ESSENCE OF TURKISH ROMANY (GYPSY) DANCE 

The Turkish Romany (Gypsy) people have performed in Turkey for the past 1000 years. They were the most famous street performers during the Ottoman Empire & this art form is the mother of Turkish Oriental Dance.

ARTEMIS will teach steps, hip & pelvic articulations, isolations, gestures & some short combinations. This material is perfect of your Tribal, Oriental or Romany dance vocabulary. ARTEMIS also briefly will share the music, history, costuming & culture of this illusive population

NANDA is one of the most renowned teachers in Brazil, Director of a studio & KALUA  FUSION TROUPE in Belo Horizonte, a professional photographer & a teacher and dancer in Middle Eastern & Tribal who is always traveling teaching her  amazing workshops.

 

Her dance is hypnotic, magical, sensual &  full spirit dancer either in Middle Eastern or Tribal. She mesmerizes the public with her curves, her talent & her sensuality.

She takes us through ancient times, in perfect harmony …her body, music, movement and her expressions.  She brings in her belly  the perfection of the seduction of women.

CLASS 2 : ASIAN FUSION W/ FAN

 For the second class this creative dancer brings us an amazing theatrical Asian dance...Enchanted by this culture NANDA began to develop a fusion inspired by the most diverse Asian Dances, merging movements & poses from Kung-fu, movements with fan, chinese, japanese and belly dance.

Chinese Dance has its own vocabulary & meaning, for the dancer to express fully her thoughts and feelings with grace.  A singular amazing and surprising fusion - Dance experience would be very helpful for this class. - BRING FAN

 

 

 

KILMA  (BRASIL)
KILMA Brazilian choreographer & instructor, research Afro Brazilian dances and rhythms. Her work includes popular culture of Brazil through the adaptation of the popular dances to the Tribal Fusion.

KILMA is BELE FUSCO dancer, Director of the CIA LUNAY & STUDIO LUNAY, wrote the book BELLYDANCE, MOVEMENT THROUGH THE ENERGY in 2004, introduced the tribal style in Buenos Aires, Argentine in 2006 & was cover of CD Nomad Club inTokyo, Japan/2007.

As the founder of BRAZILIAN TRIBAL FUSION , KILMA travels teaching dances technique accompanying w/ the original beats of drums. Her dance is strong, marked by aboriginal and African style. We are thrilled to have her Art - THE BEAT OF BRAZIL at SPIRIT. She brings in her luggage Rhytms as Maracatu, Coco, Baião, Ijexá, Afoxé, Samba, and so much more...

CARMINE GUIDA (NY)  is an accomplished instructor, teaching doumbek both nationally & internationally. His students compliment his lively and engaging teaching style and his ability to make complex technique and intricate rhythms easy to learn.


CARMINE is a member of several music ensembles including Middle Eastern fusion group "Djinn" and traditional music group "The Turkish Band Camp All Stars", & his  music has been featured on several CDs and DVDs as well as prime time T.V. shows.

 

CARMINE OWN WORDS: "Teaching is my passion. I have the wonderful job of traveling the world teaching people how to play doumbek. It brings me great joy to have someone who has never played a musical instrument before be able to play several rhythms after just one class. My specialty is teaching drummers and dancers how to work together. I love my job".

THE CLASSES:  

1) DOUMBEK ROCKSTAR: ROLL, POP, SLAP AND SNAP!
In this workshop, you will learn techniques and new hits to use on your doumbek. These are the rock star tricks!  Learn how to incorporate these hits into rhythms and solos to really spice up your playing. This workshop is perfect for any drummer who knows the basics.


 
2) HOW TO PLAY A DRUM SOLO FOR A DANCER
The drum solo is the climax of any belly dancer show. This is a great time for the dancer and drummer to improvise and communicate. In this workshop, you will learn how to build your own solos and improvising techniques. You will also learn what the dancer is expecting from you and how to play something interesting and exciting for them. This workshop is perfect for drummers who know the basics. This workshop is also great for dancers to learn about the drum solo from the drummer's perspective.

 

 

 

DARBUKA DAVE(AL) has been studying the goblet drum for 9 years, sought out instruction from some of the best teachers in the country, including Kevin "Nevik" Hartnell, Jeremiah Soto & Issam Houshan.

 

He is considered an excellent instructor and performer by his contemporaries, known for his technical precision and emotional expression.


He has performed & taught at international festivals, workshops & shows throughout the country.
 

THE CLASS - WORKING W/ SIXES, SEVENS & NINES – Many drummers have problems with time signatures that are not the basic 4/4 rhythm. We will learn a sure-fire method for counting rhythms in odd meters, as well as an overview of the most common rhythms that are played in these “odd” time signatures. It's a good class for anybody who wants to understand complex time signatures. It even helps DANCERS learn to dance in odd time.
 

 

 

 

DANYAVAAD (CA) I met them playing in CA....fell in love....Talented, colorful & so much fun......DANYAVAAD plays live original Middle Eastern flavored music featuring the electric sitar and tribal drum beats.

 

They create an atmosphere of Middle Eastern lounge mixed with Indian vibes and rock.

 

The unique songs of Danyavaad are originals by San Diego's Guitarmageddon Champion GREG VAUGHAN, tribal drummer GABRIEL PENIX, and DJ/bassist SANDY BAGRI.
